JEEP 232 / 258 6-CYLINDER HEI CONVERSION F.A.Q.

Q: Does the HEI Distributor come COMPLETE and “ready-to-run” in my Jeep or AMC 6-cylinder engine, or do I have to “recurve” the distributor or install the correct drive gear, etc?

A: Our HEI Distributor Upgrades are the MOST COMPLETE units on the market and are shipped to you READY-TO-RUN and need ZERO modifications or add-ons. These are specifically designed and manufactured to be run in ALL Jeep and/or AMC vehicles with the 232 or 258 cid
6-cylinder engines from 1972-1990 model years.

Q: When it comes time to replace the distributor cap & rotor, do I have to buy them from CRT Performance, or are these parts available at local auto parts stores?

A: ALL replacement parts for our HEI distributors are available at ANY local auto parts store. We will supply you with the correct part numbers upon request.

Q: Will my tachometer still function if I install an HEI Distributor in my Jeep?

A: ABSOLUTELY! Each HEI Distributor Upgrade is supplied with the necessary TACH LEAD that runs from your new HEI Distributor directly to your stock or aftermarket tachometer.

Q: What’s different about CRT Performance HEI Distributor upgrades than other HEI-style units on the market sold by other companies at significantly higher prices?

A: CRT Performance uses Genuine GM distributor housings and shafts and then builds each unit using only the highest quality BRAND NEW internal components. Other similar units on the market have housings that are machined from large solid pieces of aluminum known as “billet.” Since there is SO MUCH wasted material and machining time involved in producing these housings, the unit cost is MUCH HIGHER than CRT’s original equipment GM cast-aluminum housings. Therefore, we are able to pass the savings on to our customers and fellow Jeepers rather than charging excessive prices for these units. CRT prides ourselves in being able to supply the highest quality units at the lowest possible prices.

Q: Will installing an HEI distributor prevent me from passing state and/or local emissions tests?

A: Although installing one of our HEI Distributor upgrades will most likely REDUCE your emissions produced by your engine, some states have “visual inspections” where they might balk at something different than stock having been installed. However, this is a rare occasion and through the years and having sold HUNDREDS of these units, we have never heard of any major issues from our customers in their respective States.

Q: I’ve seen other companies mention that their coil produces 50,000 volts of spark But CRT units show a rating of 35,000 volts. Why?

A: People have a common misconception that “MORE is BETTER.” We at CRT KNOW that in this case, that’s FAR FROM THE TRUTH. 90% of ALL original GM vehicles from 1974-1995 used HEI distributors that used the 35,000 volt coils. This is MORE than enough spark energy for almost any vehicle outside of race cars. Your stock Jeep coil produces around 17,000 – 20,000 volts of spark, so our coil is giving you just about DOUBLE the original spark output of your stock system. Since we are producing this mark spark energy, we recommend opening your spark plug gaps to 0.045” rather than the stock 0.035” setting. Simply stated, there IS such a thing as “overkill.” It is absolutely NOT necessary nor recommended to use a coil hotter than our 35,000 volt coil in order to prevent possible damage to your spark plugs and/or distributor cap and rotorwhich can be caused by excessive spark output and “burn-thru.” Remember, you are working with a “Jeep” not a “Corvette.
